When you are training in cosmetology school, sometimes it is easy to forget that you will have to interview and look for a job. It is a good idea to “act the role” in beauty school for the stylist that you want to become. remember, stylists typically attract clients with similar personalities, so staying upbeat and positive will keep your days energized and productive.

Here are a 5 tips to finding a career as a stylist

1. Talk to your school’s job placement provider about salons in your area

2. Check salon job boards (like this Chicago Salon Job Board)

3. Prepare your resume before attending a career fair

4. Send your resume to the salon via fax or email and follow up with a phone call

5. If you know the salon you want to work for, write down why you should be hired there – they might ask you!

Remember, not all salons are the same…Some will offer benefits packages with 401k (savings plans) while others will give you are larger commission but no training.  Depending on where you want to go in this industry, advanced training will always help you achieve your goal.  If you think you are good, you probably are, but what will always challenge you is working with different textures, shapes, and colors.  Try to keep your ego in check because it really takes a lifetime to master every aspect of hair, not just a few techniques.  Always remember that you get out of this industry what you put in.  When you start looking for a job, visit the job boards at SalonApprentice.com.

Good luck!
